Wedding Ring Holder

My wife really wanted a live edge style ring bearer box for our wedding. I wanted to have something hand made in our wedding so I made this one. It is made out of spalted Cherry, and the live edge spalting is really hit or miss.

Now it sits on our dresser and holds our rings when we need to take them off.

I cut and dried 10 or 15 blanks of different sizes and parts of limbs for this ring box. I knew that quite a few of these would split or check during drying, and others would have too much rot or unappealing spalting. I selected one that was a good size, no major splits or rot, and had good spalting potential on the live edge --the one in the middle in this picture-- which I ended up using.

I didn't have access to a bandsaw with tall enough clearance to cut the lid on this so I had to hand cut it. Then it was just a matter of drilling holes and finishing. I went with standard beeswax and mineral oil finish because it gives great color to the endgrain on the cherry.
