Cribbage Board
I made this cribbage board out of a piece of spalted Cherry wood that I harvested and dried. I absolutely love how the spalting came through.
I didn't have access to a drill press when I made it and it would have been too difficult to get all of the holes vertical with a hand drill so I used a brace and bit to hand drill all of the holes.
I harvested and dried the spalted Cherry for this board myself. Initially my plan was to make either a climbing hangboard or a cutting board, but there were too many knots and too much spalting for either of those uses.
A cribbage board isn't complete unless it has a place to store the pegs. Rather than the traditional plastic slider on the bottom, I made a tiny dovetailed drawer. I used half-blind dovetails on the front of the drawer.
Other than the Wenge pull, I wanted the drawer to blend as seamlessly as possible into the side of the board. This was the purpose of the half-blind dovetails. I also found an off-cut with well aligned grain direction and color for the drawer front to achieve this.
Dealing with spalted wood can be challenging. In this case, the wood I harvested had a large area that was too rotted to use. This limited how wide the cribbage board could be.
Since there was no way to plan for exact dimensions, I made a 2D CAD model of relative hole placements and then re-parameterized the relations to get the layout to fit on the board properly. I printed that out to transfer exact hole locations onto the board.
